I Want to Talk to You About Mallorca

Instagram

A few weeks ago, I was asked by someone how “I would “sell” the island as a destination for luxury clients”. I told that person I did not have to “sell” a damned thing, I just had to talk to them about how I feel about Mallorca, about the places that hold pieces of my heart and my memories, how remembering a particular story takes me back to those places I love.

After a lot of thinking about it, going down my memory line, and drinking the equivalent of three Olympic-sized swimming pools of black coffee, I decided against doing a marketing piece, and instead, talk to that person I was supposed to be trying to convince to buy plane tickets and fly from far away to experience what I experience every day of my life. This is what I came up with. Let us know in your social media network of preference what you think.

Dear Friend,

Today I want to talk to you about a corner of the world that I hold close to my heart, a place that is not just my home, but a part of my soul: Mallorca, “sa meva roqueta.” This island, proudly emerging from the Mediterranean, is a slice of paradise where history and nature intertwine to offer a unique experience, full of beauty and serenity. I want you to join me, through my words, which will be our vehicle, as we explore the most magical corners of my land, hoping you will come to feel the same love and respect that I have for it.

SOLLER TRAIN & STREETCAR

Mallorca is not just a destination; it is a land of contrasts and charms. Think of Sóller, a valley that seems to have been taken out of a dream, where the Serra de Tramuntana rises majestically, protecting this corner that has witnessed centuries pass with the same calm as its orange trees swaying in the breeze. Here, time seems to stand still, and the best way to experience it is aboard the Sóller train. A century-old train, made of wood and iron, that winds through mountains and tunnels, carrying the scent of the earth all the way to Palma. It’s a journey that enchants, a route that leaves the soul with the melody of wheels on rails and the view of the Mediterranean in the distance.

Climbing beyond Sóller, you will find Fornalutx, a small mountain village that hides like a treasure among the peaks of the Tramuntana. Here, peace is not just a state of mind but a constant murmur in the air. The cobbled streets, stone houses with green shutters, and geraniums hanging from every window — everything in Fornalutx invites you to get lost, to let yourself be carried away by the simplicity and beauty of everyday life. Walking through its streets is a meditation, a return to the very essence of life, wrapped in the soft murmur that caresses the ears of the village “padrines” as they speak in Mallorquí about their lives.

But the magic of Mallorca is not limited to the mountains. Its coasts hold secrets of indescribable beauty. I close my eyes and see Es Trenc. Imagine a stretch of sand so fine it feels like talcum powder, washed by waters so crystal clear you could lose yourself in their transparency. Es Trenc is the whisper of the sea caressing the shore, it is the infinite horizon blending with the sky. Here, time and space dissolve, and all that remains is the immensity of nature in its purest form.

I can’t talk about Mallorca without mentioning Valldemossa, a town that looks as if it was taken straight out of a storybook. Nestled in the heights of the Tramuntana, Valldemossa is a place where peace is breathed in every corner. Its cobbled streets, flower-covered houses, and the Cartuja, where Chopin and George Sand found refuge, make this place more than just a town: it’s a sanctuary of tranquility. Walking through Valldemossa is to feel the weight of history and the lightness of the present coexisting in perfect harmony.

MALLORCA ES TRENC

And then there’s Sa Calobra and Es Torrent de Pareis, spectacular jewels in the island’s crown. The journey to Sa Calobra is an adventure in itself, a road that twists through mountains and descends toward the sea like a river of asphalt. Upon arrival, the view takes your breath away: a rocky gorge opening up to the Mediterranean, with waters so deep blue they seem to hold all the secrets of the sea. It’s a place where nature shows its power and beauty in their rawest and most majestic forms.

Mallorca, my dear friend, is much more than its landscapes. It is an island with a rich history, home to cultures that have left their mark on every stone and every corner. From the Phoenicians to the Romans, passing through the Arabs and the Catalans, all have contributed to creating the Mallorca we know and love today. The language we speak, Mallorquín, is one of the most cherished jewels of our heritage, a soft and melodic Catalan that proudly resonates, alive, in the streets of Palma and the markets of the villages.

The climate of Mallorca is another gift that nature has bestowed upon us. With mild winters and sun-drenched summers, this island invites you to enjoy life outdoors, to stroll along its beaches, to explore its mountains, or simply to sit on a terrace with a glass of wine, letting time pass unhurriedly.

LA SEU CATHEDRAL MALLORCA

Palma, our capital, is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city that still retains the charm of its roots. La Seu Cathedral, with its impressive rose window, is the spiritual heart of the city, while the Bellver Castle offers panoramic views that leave you speechless. Palma is a place where the old and the new meet, where you can lose yourself in the labyrinth of streets in the Old Town and then enjoy a gourmet dinner in one of the many restaurants offering the best of our cuisine.

But Mallorca is more than the sum of its parts. It is an island that must be felt, a place where every corner has a story to tell. I invite you, my friend, to come and discover my land, to lose yourself among its villages, its beaches, and its mountains, to find out for yourself why those of us born here carry Mallorca, sa nostra roqueta, in our hearts forever.

A CITY SQUARE IN PALMA

Mallorca is an island that captivates, a land of contrasts where calm mixes with vibrant life, where history meets modernity, and where every visitor takes a piece of this “roqueta” in their soul. Here I wait for you, with open arms and a heart full of pride to share with you this piece of paradise I call home.

Mallorca is not just mine or the Mallorcans’. It belongs to all who come and fall in love with it, as I know you will. Until that day, my friend. A warm hug from Mallorca.
